Viaduct Replacement - Phase One

Project Summary: Viaduct Replacement - Phase One

This project replaces the southern section of the SR 99/Alaskan Way Viaduct between S. Holgate and King Street with a new, surface level section. This new section will include an interchange at Atlantic Street connecting to SR 519 (East Marginal Way), improving freight movement from the Port of Seattle and general access to the Washington State Ferry’s Coleman Dock. The viaduct carries 110,000 vehicles each day, roughly one-quarter of the north-south traffic through downtown Seattle.

Benefits:

  • The improvements are useable in all options under consideration for the replacement of the viaduct.
  • Surface level construction improves seismic safety and waterfront visibility.
  • The project upgrades the Battery Street Tunnel for fire and life safety.
