Project Summary: SR 520 Replacement

This project will replace the existing 520 Bridge with a new six-lane bridge, adding HOV lanes in each direction, shoulders and a bike/pedestrian path. The project includes a reversible ramp to the I-5 express lanes and replacement of the Portage Bay structure with a new six-lane structure. On the east side of Lake Washington, the project includes eastbound HOV lanes to Evergreen Point Station or farther east as budget allows.

Benefits:

  • Protects vital east/west link from catastrophic failure due to earthquake and/or high winds.
  • Increases people-carrying capacity between urban and employment centers on both sides of Lake Washington (downtown Seattle, University District, Bellevue, Overlake and Redmond).
  • Westbound HOV lane eliminates the need for transit vehicles and carpools to merge into the general-purpose lanes to get across the lake.
  • Standard shoulders increase safety and reliability.
  • Provides a travel opportunity that is not available today by adding to the regional non-motorized network.
  • Improves transit’s efficiency and reduces cost of cross-lake service.
  • Creates jobs, and improves access to jobs and educational opportunities.
