This project adds HOV lanes to the outer roadway by re-striping some segments and widening the roadway in others. The project maintains the reversible center roadway operation — including existing Mercer Island SOV access and two-plus carpool designation.

Benefits:

  • Increases the people-carrying capacity of the I-90 corridor and improves speeds for all users.
  • Buses serving the reverse commute will now have a similar travel time to buses serving the traditional commute.
  • Improves transit efficiency, speed and reliability.
  • Improved access for HOVs to special events in Seattle (Mariners, Seahawks, festivals).
  • Provides for future conversion of the center roadway to a HCT use.
